Reasearch: Opening credits & Typography

Reasearch on opening credits:

What are opening credits?

Opening credits are shown at the very beginning and list the most important members of the production. They are usually shown as text superimposed on a blank screen or static pictures, or sometimes on top of action in the show. There may or may not be accompanying music.

What is their purpose and what do they provide?

Opening are used to show the audience an idea of what the film they are going to watch is going to be like this can be shown by typography used and music used in the opening credits also it is used to show the audience the most important poeple to do with the movie they are going to watch their order of importance is shown by the order their names appear in the opening the order is usualy production, actors, casting, music, costume, editing, producer and dierector.

How do opening credits make the audience feel?
Depending on the type of film you going to watch the opening credits can make you feel different ways for example if you are going to watch a thriller the goal would be to make the audience feel on edge and uncomfertable from the start of the film.

Thriller opening credits analysis:
In the opening credits of se7en they use dark lighting and colour is used throughout the opening credits low key lighting is used to make the audience feel on edge an uncomfertable throughout the opening also the colour red is used throughout the opening by the use of red filters and red blood splatter on the book pages in the opening this is used to show that the film will have lots of blood and gore throughout and also helps to give a uneasy feeling for the audience at the beging of the film. This conventional to thrillers because the goal of a thriller is to create an uneasy scary atmosphere for the audience

Also the slow eery music used makes an uneasy atmosphere as the scratching sounds and radio tuning sounds make the audience feel uncomfertable and uneasy because they are strange and anoying noises for the audience to hear. This conventional to thriller movies because thriller want the audience to feel uncomfertable this makes them feel uncomefertable from the begining of the movie.

Conclusion:
In my opening credits i will be using the order of importance and i will want to also make the audience feel uneasy and uncomfertable like the opening credits of se7en as they are very affective and make the audience uneasy from the begining of the movie.

Reasearch on Typography:

What is typography:
Typography is how writing is presented to the audience through font, style, size, letter case and colour in film.

Typography and its connotations:

Action: These are the opening credits to expendables big bold thick style of lettering is used to give as an uderstanding that the film is going to have alot of action related content also the font i quiet big with an army style to the lettering this gives us the idea that there will be alot of action in the film.
sci-fi: Below are is the opening title to star trek into darkness the is given a sci-fi look by using an alien look to the lettering in the title to make it clear to the audience that they are watching a sci-fi movie and they use big bold lettering to also suggest that there is the sub-genre of action being used in the film. They use a bluey sci-fi colour and a metal futureistic texture to the letering to further show the audience that the film is a sci-fi movie.
Thriller: Below are he opening credits to se7en the opening credits use eery scartchy looking style to show the audience that the film is goin to be quiet eery and could make them feel uncomfertable they make the letter shackey with very strange uncomfertable noices over the top to make the audience feel uncomfertable and show them that the film they are watching is a thriller.
What typography i want to use:in my thriller film i want to use the scratchy typography used in se7en examples of this are in the opening credits above i want to use this typography because it is good for making the audience feel uncomefertable and gives the opening credits a eery feeling for the audience. i will also want my typography to quiet small but big enough to be able to be read by the audience the colour i will use will be white becuase our film will be quite dark so this will make the writing stand out for the audience.

  1. Good work here Jordan. Credits are discussed well and good that you relate back to audience responses. Your typography discussion and examples are well chosen and analysed.

    To improve;
-try and having a look at another opening other than 'Seven' to discuss and develop more ideas
-state in your conclusion of 'opening credits' what ideas you have taken from 'Seven' that you want to use.

-provide some images/examples of fonts that you plan to use.
