Evaluation: Question 7- Looking back at the preliminary task, what do you feel have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Question 7: Looking back at the preliminary task what do you
feel have learnt in the progression from it to the full product.
What was the preliminary task?
The preliminary task was a short 30 sequence which we made
in our groups that were given to us by our teacher. The purpose of the preliminary task was to allow us to get behind the camera for the first time and practice how to do different camera shots and how to use the camera in general when doing the preliminary task it was quite a shock to the system as we were thrown straight in with hardly any experience with using any filming equipment this did show us the difficulties of the filming process as we had to decide everything on our own like the location and narrative and as we found out when filming they are not easy things to decide.
What have I improved in since creating the preliminary?
Since the preliminary im more confident in my filming
because in the preliminary I did not use a wide range of camera shots I only
used simple and easy shots but in our final thriller I then was more confident
and was able to use a wider range of camera shots.
Another thing that I have improved on is using iconography
in our preliminary we only had one piece of iconography when using the bracelet
but in my final thriller we used much more iconography in the clothes the
characters were wearing and using objects like the doll or a mirror.
Since the preliminary I have improved much more in my
editing skills in the preliminary task I did not use any affects throughout the
film but I now can use a wide range of affects like fades and flashing lights.
Also I have improved in the jumpiness of the preliminary
task as some bits seemed very jumpy wear as in the final thriller the film is
much more fluent.
In the preliminary task we used this shot when the two
people were having a conversation but in the final task we used this shot for a
scene that will cause the audience to feel on edge instead of them being calm as the lighting is darker and we will use music over the top of the seen to get the audience on edge.

I
n the preliminary we used a POV shot when Lashane was running to get the bracelet but in the final film we decided that the POV that we used was to blurred and did not show enough detail so in the final task we used a POV but not moving to make sure all the details were shown.

In the preliminary task we used this shot to show the characters progressing but when creating the final product we realised that this does not show emotions of the character so we used a closer shot to make sure that the audience can see the characters emotion.
The preliminary task was essential as it taught us how to
use all to use the camera and how to simply edit film and also has taught to
use simple convention like simple camera shots and iconography before we film
our final thriller so we have experience. We created a storyboard so that we
had an idea of what we are going to do before starting the thriller we planned
group roles by looking at which of the group is good at the different roles and
then we decided on who is going to do each role. We also created pre-production
paperwork as we needed this to allow us to do our thriller. By doing this
planning it meant that we had a better idea of what we were going to do before
we started and we had experience so it was easier and quicker to create with
fewer mistakes.
Personal
Reflection:
I
feel that we created a a successful
thriller because we have we put across
thriller conventions well to make out thriller as conventional as
possible and we have put across the
emotions of our characters well enough to make the audience relate to
them and feel the emotions that they are feeling.
I
most enjoyed editing the film and seeing it all come together into the thriller
opening that we were aiming to make.
In
our film the framinf and lighting could be improved in my thriller as some clios seem to be a bit
jumpy and other scenes are quiet
difficukt to see due to bad lighting.
Over
the whole process the main things that I have learned over the whole process is
how to make a good narrative and how to use different technolgies to present my
work for example prezi.
Evaluation: Question 5- How did i attract/adress my target audience?
Question 5
As well as carrying out a variety of secondary research on thrillers and audiences, I also had to carry out primary reasearch on my target audience.
Our target audience were given a questionnaire made by me to reasearch what my audience see as a conventional thriller film.
As well as carrying out a variety of secondary research on thrillers and audiences, I also had to carry out primary reasearch on my target audience.
Our target audience were given a questionnaire made by me to reasearch what my audience see as a conventional thriller film.
My questionnaire contained questions about what my target
audience like in thriller film, for example one of my questions were what type of setting do you think is typical to thriller films.
All though
this was a questinon with alot of answer i gave them just four options family home, forest, abandoned house and warehouse 10 out of 20 people then awnsered family home this then influenced our choice of setting as we used that as our setting.
I also asked the audience what their preffered theme in a thriller is. 8 people out of twenty said that partanormal was their favourite when answering in my questionaire this then lead us to use the paranormal them as the them for our thriller film.
Overal the primary research was
beneficial to my research and planning because it helped enabled my group to find out what our target audience want and how we can make a film that they will love Furthermore he questionnaire helped us to make our
thriller film conventional to the thriller genre as we found out what people see as conventonal in thrillers we based our thriller film around
the theme of paranormal activity. the responce from our questionaire influenced our desicion as that is the one that our target audience liked the most also we gave the questionaire to people between the ages of 15 and 20 this then helped us descide that the age of our film will 15 as we are now basing our film around the answers to our questionair and the ages of the people we gave our questionaire to are 15 to 20.
Evaluation: Question 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Question 1
The task:
I believe
that my group were able to create
a successful and conventional thriller film because we stuck to our idea that we thought up through our reasearch and developed it as we progressed and based it around other successful thrillers such
as Incidious and Paranormal Activity. Also we used our questionaire results to give to our target audience what they believe is a conventional thriller film which they will like.
Does my film follow the generic conventions of the thriller genre?
In order to make sure that my thriller followed the conventions of a conventional i reasearched successful thrillers that are similar to mine e.g. Paranormal Activity. This made sure that i followed the conventions of a successful thriller film. I done this so i could make sure that i got the film across to my target audience and make sure that they will like the opening that i create. Also the use of cinematography and editing techniques to put across the emotions that i wanted to put acrosshelped me make sure that my thriller was as conventional as i could make it.
The soundtrack my group created also helped make sure my film was conventional as the soundtrack to a film is one of the most important parts when trying to create different moods or make the audience feel different emotions when watching the film.
Generic conventions of thrillers:
Our setting was a family home this helped to connect with the audience on a personal level as they feel that you should be safe in a family home but in the film it is not safe this then twists their own views and maks them feel that being at home is not as safe as they thought before this then helps to create tension and make the audience feel uneasy.
The task:
We were given the task to create a successful and conventional two minute
thriller opening. In order to carry out this task we were placed into
small groups of three or four with people who are all good at different things e.g.
someone who is good with computers.
Our first task was to
analyse famous and successful thriller films and see what made them conventional to
the thriller genre
so we could get an understandingof what we would need to include in our thriller opening to make it successful and what conventions were used, and how they were used in the film.
After
doing this we were all placed in groups and then we began creating
and filming our own 2 minute thriller
opening. In order to successfully create conventional 2 minute thriller opening we needed to create and do
various things e.g. we had to create a narrative and create a questionaire that we gave to our target audience to reasearch what they like in a thriller.
In
order to create our thriller we had to go through planning, pre-production and production.
Before that i had to do reasearch on the thriller genre. I done reasearch to give me a greater understanding of the generic conventions used
in thrillers and how they are used to impact the audience.

Generic conventions of thrillers:
Genric conventions are what the audience use to determine what genre the film they are watching is in our case we followed the generic conventions of the thriller genre this will then allow the audience to understand that the film they are watchong is a thriller film when they watch it. Generic conventions sum up the
use of many different parts of a genre for example what the cinematography used and the soundtrack used in a film.
Researching successful thriller films has allowed me to see that the all make sure that they incorperate the generic conventions of thrillers in their films so that the audience will know that they are watching a thriller.
Generic conventions used in my thriller:
The use of low key and natural
lighting in my film helped to show that my film was a thriller. The low key lighting used when mysterious and strange things were happening helped to build suspense and tension for the audience.
Our setting was a family home this helped to connect with the audience on a personal level as they feel that you should be safe in a family home but in the film it is not safe this then twists their own views and maks them feel that being at home is not as safe as they thought before this then helps to create tension and make the audience feel uneasy.
The cinematography we chose to use within
our film adds to the generic conventions of a thriller film. when filming we used many different camera angles to get different emotions across to our audience such as close up shots and high angle shots. These were used to make the audience feel different emotions and connect with the character in the film.
Conventions of my target audience:
We had to look into the meanings and
reasons for age certificates and film censorship. This helped us to understand what would be suitable within our thriller
and what audience would be watching it. The content of some thriller films limits the age of
which the film can be advertised and promoted to. Age certificate 15 films can
contain adult themes, hard drugs, strong language, moderate violence and
un-detailed sexual references. with this information we then knew what we could put in our thriller and who our target audience is our thriller is a 15 so we now know what we can include in our film by looking at our age certficate.
My thriller following conventional narrative structure:
My thriller structure is aristotles narrative theory this is a simple structure that is just a begining, middle and a end. This is shown as there a three main parts to our film that show that there is a begging, middle and end to the audience.
