Reasearch: Mise en scene- Lighting and Colour

What is lighting and Colour and why are they important?

Lighting is the way lights are used to convey a mood or atmosphere in a scene of a film. Lighting is important because it creates moods and atmospheres for the people watching the film it can also guide the audiences attention to a particular object in a scene.

Colour is the way colours are used to make scenes look different and give different meaning to scenes. they are important because they can make a audience see a scene in different ways depending on the colours you use in the scene.

Angles of lighting:

Under lighting:
Light comes from below the actor/actress this tends to have a distorting effect on the actor/actress this is done to make the actor sinister or evil to the audience.

Top lighting:
Top lighting comes from above the actor/actress highlighting their features and giving the actor/actress a glamorous look to the audience.

Back lighting:
Light source is behind the actor/actress and creates a silhouette this is used to make the actor or actress look mysterious and not reveal who the person is to the audience.

Types of lighting:

Low key:
Dark with small areas of light creates shadows.

High key:
Lighting is brighter than natural lighting.

Natural:
There is no changes to lighting in the scene

Lighting conventional to thrillers:
Low key lighting is conventional to thrillers because it creates a dark eerie atmosphere to scenes of films by creating dark shadows through out the scene that add tension to the scenes of a movie and this is essential to the thriller genre.

Examples colour:

Orange filter:
Orange filters are typical in action and adventure movies.

Red filter:
Red filter used in horror and thriller.

Blue filter:
Blue filter is used in action, thriller and crime movies.

Grey filter:
A grey filter is used in horror, sci-fi and thriller films.

Green filter:
Green filters are used in crime, disaster and thriller films

Dark blue filter:
Dark blue filters are used in thriller, horror, crime and action films

Many different filters are used in thriller films the most typical filters used are dark blue and green this is because they add a eerie and dark atmosphere to the film and this is what thrillers need.

Lighting and Colour scene analysis:

This scene uses low key lighting to create a scary atmosphere for the audience watching the film we first see it used when the male victim is taking inside the night club the lighting is very low key and crates tension for the audience as they see he has hopelessly walked into a helpless situation that he will not be able to get out of.
A dark blue filter is used to the scene look very dark eerie and the audience feel uncomfortable because the scene look very strange and scary as the all the people in the night club look like they are strange and going to kill the male victim this makes the audience feel tension as they don't know if the male victim is going to survive.
Conclusion:
My research on lighting and colour has made helped me understand what lighting and colour is going to make my thriller film successful and going to affect the audience the way I want it to. In my thriller we will be using low key lighting as it is conventional to thriller films and makes the audience feel on edge and makes them feel the emotions that we want them to.

Reasearch: Editing

Editing

What is editing:

Editing is the process of chaning and minipulating scenes of a finished film to make the movie even better editing would include, Rearranging, adding and/or removing sections of video clips and/or audio clips, Applying colour correction, filters and other enhancements and Creating transitions between clips etc.

Examples of editing:

straight cut:

A straight cut is a very simple edit where one scene ends and another begins very quickly without any delays and cause no confusion for the audience.

Fade to black:

when one shot goes (moves) into another and there is a black filter  edited between two scenes.

Dissolve:

A dissolve is when one shot dissintigrates into another.

Reaction shot:

A reaction shot is any shot (often used as a cut away) in which a subject reacts to the previous shot.

Montage:

A montage is many clips that are quickly juxtaposed together  to create excitement for the audience.
Slow editing:

Slow editing is when clips are put together at slow pace and this is to create suspence and capture action.

Fast editing:

Fast editing is when clips are put together at a quick pace to make a quick intence scene for audience.

180 degree rule:

The 180 degree rule is an hypothetical drawn between two or more actors. The camera must not shoot on the other side of the line and this is because it can confuse the audience and also the shooting will not be consistent.

Shot reverse shot:

A shot reverse shot is mostly used in films where a conversation is taking place and where one shot quickly follows another.

Jump cut:

A jump cut is a drastic camera movement that is noticeable to the eye the shot/edit looks like it jumps.

Slow Motion:

Slow motion is an affect that is used to make the scene look like the time in the scene has been slowed down.

Conclusion:
Looking at all the different types of edits i can add into my film has enabled me to look at the ways i could use them in my thriller film.In my thriller film i am going to be using a reaction shot to clearly show the reactions of the actors in my thriller, fade to black this is to leave the audience not knowing if it is the end if the film or if there is more so they will be left wanting to know what happens next and a montage to quckly get from on scene to another.

Reasearch: Sound

Reasearching Sound in films:

Today i am going to be talking about sound and how it is used in cinema and how much it really effects us the audience. Sound is the noices you hear when watching a movie sound is used in films to create an understanding for the audience and to create more meaning about a character and their emotion in a scene sound is one of the most important things in cinema this gives scenes an atmosphere they would not have with out it for example a horror movie without sound would not be scarey at all because the sound is not creating the horror movie atmosphere for the film.

Diegetic Sound-

Diegetic sound is sound which is part of a the film world e.g. dialogue, music from a radio or juke box. Diegetic sound can be on or off screen in a scene.

Non-Diegetic Sound-

Non diegetic sound is the opposite to diegetic it is sound that is not part of the film world and has been added into through editing e.g. a soundtrack, sound effects and voice overs

On Screen Sound-

On screen sound is sound that you can see where it is coming from for example a radio in a car.
Off Screen Sound-

Off screen sound is souns you can hear but can not see where it is coming from, but it makes sense to the film world e.g. traffic sound and coughing.

Parallel Sound-

Parallel sound is when the sound you hear in a film is what is expected e.g. a scene with children playing on a beach the parallel  sounds would be laughter, talking and the sea.

Contrapuntal Sound-

Contrapuntal sound is when the sound does not fit in the movie you are viewing a exaample of this is Jaws. The scenes of the beach are accompanied by the contrapuntal sound of the theme tune "durdur" which does not fit with the happy images of the scene.

My reasearch on sound has helped me to understand how sound can be used to affect the audience in films this will help make my thriller a better film as i now know how i can use sound to affect the audience who watch my thriller.

Reasearch: Cinematography

Reasearcing Cinematography

Today I am going to be researching cinematography. Cinematography is the different angles and ways that you move the camera in cinema. All of these different types of things change the scenes of movies to make them look different to the rest. All these things give the audience a different representation of the character and allow the audience to respond in different ways.

XLS-

In photography, filmmaking and video production, a long shot (sometimes referred to as a full shot or a wide shot) typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings. A long shot makes the audience feel like the object is far away and they do not have to worry about.

LS-

A long shot typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.

MS-

The medium shot is the most common shot used in movies. Every shot that isn't a long shot or close up is a medium shot. Medium shots can be shot with any lens, but generally a medium lens is a lens that has the least amount of distortion, which is the same as to say that it photographs people and scenery in the way you normally see them in true perspective.

CU-

In the close-up shot, a certain feature or part of the subject takes up most of the frame. A close up of a person usually means a close up of their face close-ups are obviously useful for showing detail and can also be used as a cut-in. A close-up of a person emphasizes their emotional state.

ECU-

The extreme close up gets right up close up and shows extreme detail. You would normally need a specific reason to get this close. It is too close to show general reactions or emotion except in very dramatic scenes.

ES-

An establishing shot in filmmaking and television production sets up, or establishes the context for a scene by showing the relationship between its important figures and objects. It is generally a long- or extreme-long shot at the beginning of a scene indicating where, and sometimes when, the remainder of the scene takes place.
Whiskytree created this fully CG establishing shot of 1940s Manhattan as seen from the Brooklyn Bridge.
HA-

In film a high angle shot is usually when the camera angle is located above the eye line. With this type of angle, the camera looks down on the subject and the point of focus. High angle shots also make the figure or object seem vulnerable or powerless. High angle shots are usually used in film to make the moment more dramatic or if there is someone at a high level that the character below is talking to.

LA-

In cinematography, a low-angle shot is a shot from a camera angle positioned low on the vertical axis, anywhere below the eye line, looking up. The trunk shot is a specialized type of low-angle shot. This angle is used to make someone look powerful and dominant.

Panning Shot-

A pan shot is where you pan at the same pace as a moving subject so the background is blured and the subject is sharper.

Tilt Shot-

Camera angle that looks up or down at the object being photographed, instead of being on the same level. Tilt shots are usually more dramatic than straight-angle shots. Tilting the camera down is used to observe large areas this could be used in films where there is alot of action. Tilting the camera up  is used to show the size of a object.

Crane Shot-

Crane shot is a shot taken by a camera on a crane. The uses of this shot are to view the actors from above or to move up and away from them this camera shot is a very common way of ending a movie.

Point of View Shot-

A point of view shot  is a short film scene that shows what a character is looking at. It is usually established by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something, and a shot showing the character's reaction.
Point of View shot going outdoors

Handheld Shot-

A handheld shot is the camera is held in the persons hands while filming this creates a real life feel to the film and is comonly used in thriller or horror films.
